We started this publication because most beauty coverage in the United States is paid for, directly or indirectly, by the brands it covers. American Skin Research Institute does not accept advertising tied to editorial outcomes, does not accept free product for review, and does not publish sponsored rankings. Every item we test is purchased anonymously at retail, whether that means a drugstore run, a Target aisle, or an order placed through Sephora, Ulta Beauty, CVS, Walgreens, or Amazon.com, exactly as a reader would buy it.
Our testing protocols are built around repeatable, side-by-side comparison rather than single-use impressions. Products are evaluated under consistent conditions, across enough uses to account for the reality that a foundation behaves differently in a humid East Coast July than it does once indoor heating dries everything out in January. Where a claim can be measured, we measure it. Where it cannot, we say so.
Editorial Review
Findings are reviewed before publication by a small standing committee that includes a board-certified dermatologist, a biochemist with a background in topical formulation and skin delivery, and a second dermatologist with experience in clinical and cosmetic research. Their role is to check that our methods are sound, that our language matches the evidence, and that nothing we publish overstates what a test can actually show. This is a review of process, not a promotional endorsement, and it is applied the same way to every category we cover.
